Stage Three: Digital Delay. Reference photo has no neck.

I got to the point  where I was ready to paint the lower portion and realized that my reference photo had been cropped.  I quite literally cut my own throat here. (thank you, that pun just popped into my head).  I have been grumbling about the digital frame I use for my reference photos.  It's difficult to navigate because the cheap buttons on the back don't always work.  In short, I need a normal  computer display to work from so the I can get rid of this thing. (or I can just work from life, but this one has specific lighting that won't look right if I do that)  The digital menu jumps around and I can't find the photo I need, then when I go to zoom it jumps out of the menu and I have to start over.  Hate is a strong word...I hate that thing.  By the way, my pc is just across the room and too far away to use, so Ill probably end up using my old pc as a photo holder and get a new monitor for that.
Now that I've vented, the actual photo is on this computer and I'll have to upload to the digital frame to go any further.  The danger of not being able to work on something when I'm ready is that I start to tinker with the finished parts.  So instead of tinkering, I decided to post this.  More as it develops.

  1. Hi Kevin,
Being a stickler for detail myself, I'm still going to say this: The face is so well painted and strong, you could vignette the neck is any way you please and it wouldn't hurt the portrait a bit.
I've run into similar problems over the years and it is indeed hugely frustrating to need more info to finish a painting. With your resourcefulness, I know you'll find a way to solve this. Have a good day, Kevin.
    Sincerely,
    Gary.

    1. Thank you kind sir. I should have just said...I actually have the full reference photo. I just didn't have it stored on the digital display I was working from. But I wanted to complain about the digital frame I've been using to store COPIES of reference photos. I made it confusing. So it should all go as originally planned....a masterpiece (ha ha).

  2. Don't try to make this happen without a good reference, even if you have to get someone to photograph you in this pose with this or similar lighting. It's coming along too well to rush into finishing it. Take your time (can't believe I'm saying that! ha ha) and do it up right! Looking great so far :) I think even if you don't get a good photo reference, you could just dab in darks in the neck and shoulder area and it would work, the face is so good - and what you want people to look at.

    1. Thank you, RH! You and Gary said almost exactly the same thing so great minds do indeed think alike. (or maybe just people with common sense). I have the original reference photo as I stated above, so it should all go well from here....I hope.
