New Start and a fond old memory

So....I was looking for something to post and found this OLD photo of both of my daughters in High School.  Grace, second from left, and Adrianne on the far right.  They were on the same 4X400 relay team in high school.  I was so proud to see both of them on the same team for once. Being two years apart that was a bit of a rarity, though it did happen in other sports as well.
Yes the photo has little to do with my intentions in this post, but  I found it after I wrote the following....Well it seems my ship of creative output has run aground.  After a hitting a few large waves, I am attempting to right the ship and start painting again, one brush stroke at a time.  Today was the first day in weeks that I actually put brush to paper.  Unfortunately my camera battery is dead, and I can't post it today.  The good news is that I have come up with a solution to get me back up and running.  I will be doing a series of abstract watercolors on a daily basis.  These may or may not be the most effective use of my ability, but they are going to be a way to get into the habit of painting again.  As most artist know, you can spend forever thinking about painting a great work and never get one thing accomplished.  So instead of coming up with a subject that might require more time to prepare and execute, I think it is best to first learn how to get into the habit of getting SOMETHING on paper and go from there.  In fact, it's taken me longer to write this post than it did to do that first little abstract color study sitting on my desk over there.  I haven't even kept up with my  list of artists that I usually follow.  I'm thinking this will get me going on that as well.  My apologies to all of you artists who I have been following.  I haven't forgotten about you.

  1. Oh, you've hit a slump, too? I'm right there, unable to think of anything that gets my creative juices flowing - so I watch another Brit Mystery! ha ha I've watched so many, I've developing an accent :) I think your idea is a good one. For me, working on postcard paintings for my SWAP group is, at least, making me put brush to paper. It seems I've painted less since I've started teaching my beginners and I wonder why? Perhaps I'm spending thinking time creating something for them to do and enjoy and helping out and haven't spent any thinking time on my own work. And I do have some unfinished stuff. Oh, well, summer slumps come and go. Wishing you good luck with your plan for the abstracts and hope you get a new camera battery so you can share them with us!

  2. Hi Kevin,
This is a great post. It perfectly expresses how most of us have felt at one time or another. When I began painting, the navy always found a way to interrupt me. The desire was there, but always having to start over grew tiresome.
Retirement was the cure, but I was lucky. Twenty years and I was on my own. It provided me the time required to pursue this crazy dream and I feel so blessed to have been able to take advantage of the opportunity.
You'll get there, too, Kevin. I have a very good feeling about you and your future in art.
    Sincerely,
    Gary
PS Your daughters are lovely young ladies!

  3. As much as I try to avoid it, I still end up bragging about the two greatest accomplishments of my life. Helping my wife raise our two incredibly bright, funny daughters. I resist calling them beautiful because everyone's kids are beautiful, however not everyone's are as bright and funny. But again, this urge to show my pride in something I really can't take full credit for keeps overtaking me. I am finding that my recent situation with my father, who has suffered a stroke and needs to be tended to is taking me away from this blog for a bit. I will try to continue to paint and make good use of my time. Thanks for your kind words and encouragement.
